Cynthia Chuang and Erh-Ping Tsai met as classmates at the National Academy of Arts in their native Taiwan. To further their studies in the arts, the newly married couple immigrated to the United States, earning their M.F.A. degrees at Parsons School of Design.
As their creative oeuvre began to evolve, Cynthia and Erh-Ping became attracted to personal ornamentation and jewelry as their ideal vehicle of expression. The exquisite details and rich colors of the Egyptian Imperial jewelry, married with their mastery of Oriental ceramic technology, provide the foundation for their remarkably intricate work.
The couple's design concepts derive from their deep respect for nature. Their partiality for insects, fish and other creatures are reminiscent of the imagery that has been depicted in Chinese art for centuries; the use of natural elements in the porcelain and mixed media jewelry is intentional.
In creating their highly imaginative and truly original wearable art, Cynthia Chuang and Erh-Ping Tsai live and work together in perfect harmony- a classic example of art imitating life.
